Today while visiting my local shopping mall I couldn't miss the large yellow banner hanging above the entrance to the Mervyns department store - QUITTING BUSINESS it read. Just across the way drooped another banner on the front of the Linens N Things store - it read GOING OUT OF BUSINESS.
I asked a couple of employees within the Mervyns store if they had plans for what was next once the store was closed. They looked at one another and gloomily shook their heads and replied, "no, nothing yet."
I felt great compassion as I thought of the millions of people who have already been affected by this great financial meltdown and those who will soon follow as the backlash continues to sweep across this country and the world.
