On a recent trip to Lake Powell, my older daughter Sophie was challenged by some of the other teens on the trip to see how long she could tread water, or dog paddling as I was taught it was called.
Sophie, being up for most things, accepted the challenge and one hour and ten minutes later finally had to quit, her last competitor lasting only a few seconds longer.
Treading water is the swimming stroke that requires the least amount of effort. It's designed to keep you afloat with minimal exertion but the downside is you pretty much stay in one spot – there's little to no forward or backward movement.
